Free Virtual Writing Workshop

One of the benefits of social distancing is that it offers an opportunity for everyone to get creative! With this in mind, I wanted to offer one of the activities I usually run at schools and libraries for free to anyone who wants to try some writing at home.

The Real Locations in ‘The Adventurers and the Temple of Treasure’

For today's blog I thought I'd try something a bit different and tell you about the research that went into my second book, The Adventurers and the Temple of Treasure.

I've spent my whole life being fascinated by Ancient Egypt and in March 2009, aged 22, I visited on holiday. Most of the week was spent by the beautiful Red Sea in Sharm El-Sheikh, but the highlight for me was visiting Cairo for the day, exploring the Egyptian Museum, the Giza Pyramids and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali.

Summer Fun

It's been a little while since my last blog post and I'm in procrastination mode, so here's a little update on what The Adventurers (and I) have been up to!

The Adventurers and the Temple of Treasure* has been out for almost two months; have you read it yet? A couple of readers have told me they read it in one go; I'd be very interested to hear what you and your family thought of my second book (and if you have a couple of minutes to spare I'd be grateful if you would consider leaving a review!)

Holiday Fun and Free Downloads

Hola a todos! I'm writing this to you from Liberia Airport after a two week holiday in Costa Rica! I had a great time with my friend Emily in this beautiful country. Highlights included ziplining, quad biking, beaches, horse-riding, a volcano, rainforests, waterfalls and ANIMALS! Anyone who follows me on Instragram will know I got a bit trigger happy snapping pics and clips of all the wildlife - iguanas, geckos, toads, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, frogs, crabs, butterflies... and lots of dogs!

7 Days to Go!

There are just seven days to go until the release of 'The Adventurers and The Temple of Treasure' and I'm delighted to share the beautiful front and back cover created by Andrew Smith:

The Adventurers and The Temple of Treasure cover

I love the way that Andrew has captured the atmosphere of the story as well as the details he has woven into the cover. The plane, boat, train and taxi all feature in the book, as well as the Egyptian Museum shown on the back cover and the Giza Pyramid Complex.

The Adventurers are Coming…

I'm currently on a train home from my day (a.k.a. 'mortgage-paying') job and am thinking it's about time I updated this blog...

As well as being busy earning a living, I have some exciting news... THE ADVENTURERS ARE COMING (...back)!

Progress…

It's been a while since I've updated my blog for a couple of reasons: 1. I've been quite busy (I'm writing this while squeezed onto a commuter train on my way to work) and 2. I wanted to focus on finishing the first draft of The Adventurers Book 2... well, I'm happy to report, draft no.1 of book no.2 is done! I typed the last sentence over the weekend and will now go through and edit the whole manuscript a few times before sending it to my editor Amanda to weave her magic!

What can I tell you about Book 2? There's more adventure, on a bigger scale... lots of travel, more action scenes and three new characters who play an important part in the story (along with the four adventurers of course). I can't wait for you all to read it this summer and I'm excited to see what amazing cover art Andrew will create this time around!

My Favourite Children’s Books

After my social media poll on topics for my blog, most of you wanted to know why I turned down a publishing deal (which I've explained here), but many of you also voted for a blog on my favourite children's books. So I thought I'd write about both!

I've picked five favourites from my childhood, all of which I still own (although one is hidden in my mum's loft). Since I'm quite old now - and most of the books I read as a child are even older than me - none of these picks are recent... but I have enjoyed reading a few newer children's books as an adult recently so maybe that's a topic for another blog. Anyway, cracking on with my first choice:

Why I Turned Down a Publishing Deal

On my author Facebook page and Twitter page this weekend I ran a poll with some options on what to write about in my next blog post. On both platforms the majority said that they wanted to read my thoughts on why I turned down a publishing deal. Quite a few of you also said you'd like to read a post on my favourite children's books, so I'll cover that subject in my next post.

I'm not going to name the publisher that offered me a publishing agreement for one reason - even though I decided not to accept, I am still very grateful to that organisation for showing faith in my story and for wanting to work with me. It's not something I take for granted and I would not want to put other people off working with this particular publisher with some of the detail I'm about to write below.
